PhD. Baltasar Peñate Suárez (Head of the ITC Water Department and DESAL+ Living Lab coordinator) participated in the Workshop “Desalinated Water Use in Agriculture” organized last 22nd November in Jeddah by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Saudi Arabia Government and the consultant IDOM.
The workshop was chaired by MEWA Deputy Minister of Water Affairs, Dr. Abdulaziz Alshaibani, and featured nine speakers and more than 80 attendees. With the presentation titled “CANARY ISLANDS EXPERIENCE IN THE USE OF DESALINATED WATER FOR IRRIGATION”, Baltasar Peñate gave a complete overview on different aspects of water desalination for irrigation in the Archipelago, such as: statistics, crops, regulations, water & soil management, the use of RES in desalination, irrigation business models using desalinated seawater (DSW), etc concluding his presentation with some trends and future innovations. The more than four decades of experience in the Canary Islands in the use of DSW for agriculture were highly valued by the attending public.
